Ballarat community organisations will share in $1 million in grants to beef up their security as part of the state government’s Community Safety Fund Grants Scheme.
Fifteen projects in the Grampians region will receive funding under the scheme, which are aimed at reducing the risk of vandalism, graffiti and antisocial behaviour.
In Ballarat, security lighting and sensors will be installed at the Wendouree Sports and Events Centre, along with security grills on windows.
Improved lighting will also be installed in parts of the Ballarat Secondary College east campus, while the Ballarat City Brewers Baseball Club will receive a security system, window screens, locks and lighting.
Crime Prevention Minister Andrew McIntosh said the grants have been awarded to local sporting and social clubs, scout groups, community centres and neighbourhood houses.
“This is about finding community solutions for community problems,” he said.
“These facilities are the heart of our local communities and are often managed by local volunteers, so crime and antisocial behaviour have a serious impact.”
Funding has also been provided for crime-prevention education and awareness projects, including arson-reduction initiatives in bushfire-prone areas and theft-prevention programs in summer holiday spots.
The grants are part of the government’s $39 million community crime prevention program.
There will be further grant funding rounds over the next three years.
