Ballarat Magistrates Court: petrol money dispute led to assault

09 Mar, 2010 11:21 PM
A BALLARAT woman allegedly stole a handbag from a woman after a fight broke out over the cost of a trip to Melbourne, a court was told yesterday.

Two people accused of robbing the woman appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday.

Anthony Oakroot, 32, made a brief appearance and was remanded in custody to March 31.

His alleged co-offender Xanda Green, 25, indicated she would plead guilty to charges including robbery, theft and assault.

The court was told Green approached the woman, who was an acquaintance, in Howitt St and asked for a lift about 5.30pm Wednesday.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Bob Anderson said Green, Oakroot and another man and woman got into the car and were driven to Ballarat Railway Station.

Sgt Anderson said at the station Green allegedly punched the woman in the forehead before grabbing her fake crocodile skin handbag and running away.

After removing the contents of the handbag, it was dumped in a bin at the station. Police later arrested the pair at Bacchus Marsh Station.

Green's defence lawyer Mike Wardell said the woman had told the group she would drive them to Melbourne for $40 in petrol money, but they decided the train was cheaper.

Magistrate Michelle Hodgson remanded Green in custody to make a bail application today.
