A PLANNED burn started south of Daylesford yesterday is expected to burn for several days. The 712ha burn, located 10km south of Daylesford, was ignited by helicopter near the Ballan-Daylesford Rd to reduce the spread of bushfires.Other small burns in Creswick and Slaty Creek were also carried out yesterday by Department of Sustainability and Environment crews.A 73ha burn was completed 2km south-east of Creswick on Slaty Creek Rd, building on previous works. In Portuguese Pit between Slaty Creek and Melbourne Rds, a 10ha burn was completed.According to DSE burns controller Gary White, progress to date is well in excess of the target."The Midland district's annual target is 3800ha and so far more than 5000ha have been burned,'' he said."With weather conditions providing a limited number of days to reduce fuel it is vital that every available opportunity is taken to complete burns, and we have been able to put in considerable effort to date."For more information on planned burns visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au.
