IT would be hard to find a better example of a community rallying for a cause than last weekend's Come to Life Cycle Classic.
More than 1000 cyclists, ranging from the seasoned professional to the very young but very enthusiastic, pedalled their way around the Ballarat region to raise money for cancer.
While the final amount has yet to be tallied, organisers are confident that between $100,000 and $130,000 will be donated to the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre.
If that's the case, the total contribution to cancer research from this event in our city will be in excess of $300,000 in three years.
That is a huge fundraising effort on the part of all those involved, from the organisers to the participants.
Raising money for charity is a difficult task at the best of time. To do it on this scale says a lot about the commitment and the dedication of those involved in the Come to Life Cycle Classic.
The numbers competing this year suggest that the event is now well and truly entrenched on the Ballarat calendar.
Those who have helped establish the classic to be so successful, so quickly, are to be commended for their vision and their perseverance.
They have been aptly rewarded by the support of their sponsors and, of course, those who participate in the ride.
It says much about our city that we have so many who are so willing to do something good for the benefit of others.
