Fall in theft from shops a great result

29 Dec, 2005 11:24 PM
Nothing can be achieved in terms of improving wider community safety without co-operation among all in the community.

That is why the news of a fall in shoplifting and other theft from businesses during the busy Christmas-New Year period is significant.

It is not only for the fact that stores have suffered less than in previous years, but the way in which this result was achieved.

By all reports it came about because of a co-operative approach between businesses in the various city shopping precincts, the police and the city council.

There is only so much the police can do, regardless of the number of officers they apply to a particular task.

Quite often, it is not the numbers but the way the task is approached that provides the positive outcome.

By working with the traders affected by crimes like shoplifting, the police are involved in a constructive exchange of ideas about how best to deal with the problem.

It appears that good co-operation has led to a mutually acceptable approach which has led to at least some reduction.

Central Square centre manager Richard Emary put it plainly:

"As part of an ongoing effort to improve the environment around Central Square we have been working with the Victoria Police and the City of Ballarat.

"There was a marked improvement in the run-up to Christmas."

It is important now that the traders, the police and the city authorities do not let their guard down.

While focussing on the busy periods like Christmas is important, shoplifting is a year-round problem.

It is a high and frustrating cost to business.

If those concerned have found methods such as targetted foot and bicycle patrols are delivering good results then they should ensure they continue.

No extent of petty crime can be tolerated and a co-operative approach is proving to be the best way to reduce it.
