Stops at new Wendouree station unknown

27/08/2008 11:57:00 PM
THE number of train services to run from the new Wendouree Train Station will be unknown for some time.

With final designs of the station now settled, V/Line spokesman Daniel Moloney said the number of trains to run would be unknown until modelling was completed by the Department of Transport.

"We haven't finalised the plans at this stage for how many will stop at the station, but we certainly know the Ararat trains will at the very least stopping there," he said.

"But we are still working it out with the Department of Transport to see how many of the Ballarat services will stop there, bearing in mind it is a single track."

Mr Moloney said infrastructure limitations would mean not all services travelling to and from Melbourne would be able to stop at the new station.

"It's a case of how many we will be able to get out there," he said.

"Ultimately we will work through how many additional Ballarat trains can start and finish in Wendouree and we want that to be as many as possible."

Meanwhile, construction of 145 car parking spaces between Doveton and Armstrong streets is expected to be completed by mid-September.

City of Ballarat city infrastructure director Jeff Haydon said wet weather had delayed work.

"Our contractors have completed all the drainage and the lighting is now installed," he said.

"We are looking at doing the asphalting next week depending on the weather."

When the car park is finished, work will begin on sealing shoulders and marking parking bays in Ararat St, Mr Haydon said.

Preliminary works on the Wendouree Train Station have begun. A completion date of mid 2009 has been set.

Why would V/Line and the Victorian Government only build one track?! That's just plain stupid! Make it a double track that way there are no limitations on when services from either Melbourne and Ararat can stop at the new station. If you want people to use the station you need to ensure that as many services stop there and not be constrained by infrastructure limitations because it the track isn't there to use. Might as well build the whole double track at once and a platform on each side. Half the journeys between Melbourne and Ballarat take far too long because trains need to wait in line to be able to use parts of the journey which only have one track. Isnt this dangerous as well? I know there are safety mechanisms in place, but two trains travelling at 160 km/h on one track is very dangerous! Why not build the whole line with two tracks, thereby avoiding delays and any possible danger! Sounds like the smart thing to do!

I write as a former Wendouree resident, who due to cirumstances did not have a license for some time. To finally solve the huge public transport hole in that area is long overdue but must be done properly the first time!

I think the reason why there is only one track to Ararat is because the amount of patronage between Aarat and Melbourne isn't sufficient to warrent a double track. As you know Ballarat's patronage would be significantly larger given how much larger it is than Ararat, hence justifying double tracks. I could be wrong but I think the single section of track on the Ballarat line is because there is insufficient space for a second track.

The double track stops at the Gillies St intersection so do I understand correctly we're talking about 500 mtrs or so of track to the west creating an issue for a big project....weird. Hmmmm does that also mean I'll need to review what trains I catch back because my car might be at the Wendouree end while my train home terminates at Ballarat. Sorry feeling a bit cynical now, lets get all the finer details squared away and make this thing work the way it should.
