Ballarat javelin competitor ecstatic

KATHRYN Mitchell has put her hand up as a genuine contender for Olympic selection after an enormous javelin throw at a Ballarat Athletics Centre inter-club meet on Saturday.

The Eureka Athletics Club athlete threw 62.51 metres, an A-qualifying distance that also smashed the previous Victorian record.

It was the biggest throw of her career by more than three metres and has put her in the box seat for Olympic selection.

It is not yet known if the throw will officially count towards Olympic selection as it was part of an inter-club meet, held at Llanberis, but Mitchell says she is confident of making the national squad regardless.

“We still need confirmation but even if it doesn’t count, it will still go towards my overall consideration for the team,” she said.

“I know I’ve got it in me and it certainly takes the pressure off to know I can do it.”

In order to automatically qualify for the Olympics, Mitchell has to twice throw further than 61 metres in official events.

The Melbourne Track Classic in March also looms as a crucial event for Mitchell, in which she will need to place highly in order to be considered.

She said she her confidence had now soared in relation to being selected for the Olympics.

“I’m a lot more relaxed now then I was before that throw,” she said. After a year of transition last year where she worked hard to adapt to a new technique, she said she was finally starting to reap the rewards.

“I knew it was coming it was just a matter accepting it doesn’t happen easily and losing the old habits,” she said.

“Thewre is still a lot of hard work ahead of me but it does takes the pressure off a bit.”

Mitchell’s next meet is the Adelaide Track Classic next Saturday.
