RISING sprint star Shaun Hargreaves won the $2000 Daylesford Gift yesterday with older brother Matt hot on his heels.
Hargreaves burst off the blocks in white at the 5.75-metre mark, just 25 centimetres ahead of his backmarker sibling.
Then he ploughed down a decorated field that included consistent finals performers Cam Dunbar, Alex Glorie, New South Welshman Andrew Howell and 2006 winner Glenn Stephens.
He crossed the line clear in 10.99 seconds with Dunbar second and Stephens third in the Victorian Athletic League event.
The decorated sash caps off a stellar season for the 20-year-old, who this festive season won the Devonport Gift 400-metre and finished second in the Burnie Gift on New Year's Day.
A quick turnabout did not hinder the Werribee sprinter but he was wary of his brother steaming along in the lane beside him.
"He's intimidating but I have raced him down over 200 metres before and just got him," Hargreaves said.
"I could see everybody else, there's a lot of good runners in the race.
"I could not hear him.
"I was just trying to get to the line and finish."
This was Hargreaves' first appearance at Cricket Willow.
The John Harvey/Peter Walsh-trained athlete captured the Mt Gambier Gift, a 120m handicap, early in the season but Daylesford marked his first win across 100 metres.
He said, for now, this latest win put him one-up on his decorated 25-year-old brother, who claimed the La Trobe Gift title this summer.
Hargreaves relished conditions on the sloped track at Daylesford, working hard to pocket the $1200 winner's cheque for his efforts.
"The uphill track and head wind suit me _ that's when I run my best race," Hargreaves said.
"I'm in form at the moment and it's good to bring it back and win here."
The Victoria University sports management-exercise science student will turn his attention to the Rye Gift next weekend where he is likely to run the 70m, 120m and 400m events.
He hoped to gradually build his form leading into Stawell.
Three Ballarat veterans reached the semi-finals of the Daylesford Gift.
Peter O'Dwyer, Rodney Mathews and Robert Lehmann made it through the heats while Willaura youngster Simon Menz was also in the mix.
