BALLARAT father and son duo Wayne and Rhys Duggan have collected a swag of medals at the Australian Speed and Marathon titles at Lake Bonney in South Australia.
Wayne collected six medals, including two golds, while 20-year-old Rhys bagged 10 medals with three gold.
In the observing class, Wayne won the open men’s marathon and 60mph restricted skier class.
He was second in the standard motor open cockpit boat class and third in the unlimited outboard.
Duggan senior also skied his way into second in the modified open cockpit boat class and third in the 40-50 year old men’s division.
Rhys also had success in each discipline.
As an obesrver, he won the unlimited outboard and was second in the modified open cockpit (six-litre 60mph) and F2 boat classes, as well as social men and tadpoles 0-10 events. In the skiing classes, he won the 19-25 men’s and the open men’s marathon and was second in the standard motor open cockpit.
He almost snared a hat-trick of Australian skiing titles, but was beaten by .04 seconds in a standard motor open cockpit race.
Wayne said it was never smart to think ahead in skiing, but believed Rhys, who is ranked number one nationally in the 19-24 age bracket, had what it took to go further in the sport.
“With his potential there was always the possibility he would do well,” Duggan said.
Chelsea Kelly was another Ballarat skier gold medallist. She won the 19-25 women and came third in the social women.
