UNBEATEN Brisbane Spartans defied a brave effort by Ballarat Miners to run away with a commanding 32-point win in the South East Australian Basketball League in Ballarat last night.
RetireInvest Ballarat Miners had their sights on a monumental upset when they led by 11 points early in the third quarter.
Down by the same margin in the opening term, the Miners turned their fortunes around with some disciplined defence and quick, aggressive offence.
They produced some of their best basketball of the season.
Up to that point the Spartans were relying on the giant Greg Vanderjagt as the main avenue to the basket, while Ballarat had three in double figures - Jamal Brown, Rishawn Norwood and BJ Carter.
The game changed complexion with three minutes remaining in the third stanza.
Brisbane took control by playing a zone and in eight minutes scored 19-0.
This gave the visitors a 15-point buffer and the game was as good as over.
Ballarat managed only 15 points in each of the last two quarters as it went to the final buzzer looking physically and mentally drained.
Miners coach Shane Mathison said they expected the change up by Brisbane, but were unable to adjust to it.
Mathison agreed that the Spartans had got into the heads of the Miners and this was something they could not allow to happen.
He said Ballarat had to learn to cope with trend changes in a game and take it in its stride.
Chris Goulding was unstoppable late for Brisbane.
Showing why he is arguably the best and most dynamic guard in the SEABL, he shot 13 last quarter points to take his tally to 36, while Vanderjagt scored 32.
Brown was steady offensively for the Miners with 22 points and plucked 17 rebounds before tiring.
The Miners now have just two wins from seven games, while Brisbane is at the other end of the east conference ladder on six wins.
