THE Bulls, known for causing trouble with the bat, have put a dent in Mt Clear’s campaign a month out from finals.
An undermanned, bottom-ranked Brown Hill eclipsed its highly-fancied rival four wickets down in a two-day upset at the University of Ballarat on Saturday.
The result has cost the Mounties third spot, putting them into the danger ladder position of fourth with two potential rivals nipping at their heels.
They must now seek to bounce back to form in further two-day clashes with an in-form Golden Point and outside finals chance East Ballarat in Ballarat Cricket Association club firsts.
For the Ballarat Electrical Bulls, victory sounded a reminder to their rivals how they like to punish teams that allow them too much leeway.
And they did so comfortably.
The Bulls picked up at 2-17, chasing 194 runs.
Young batsman Nathan Edwards and Jack James took charge in a 90-run stand for the third wicket and put the Bulls in control.
Edwards reached 37 runs and James continued in a 51-run partnership with key bat Jason Knowles to make 77 runs before he was dismissed lbw.
James chalked up 10 fours in his knock, an effort mirrored by Knowles in bringing up a half-century and safely guiding the Bulls to victory.
A Nick Hyden boundary sealed the win and the result was complete just 56 overs into the day’s play.
Mt Clear struggled to bowl and field well – once the Bulls got a sniff of a win, there was little holding them back.
It concluded a lacklustre match for the Mounties, who lacked any serious batting figures last week until a late saviour in number nine bat Rhett Ovens and his unbeaten 43 runs.
The win lifts the Bulls off the ladder bottom leading into a match with fellow lowly-ranked team North Ballarat.
The Bulls still have a chance to add another twist to the BCA finals in a final round match with play-off aspirant Darley.
