Cycling legend Stuart O’Grady returns

AUSTRALIAN cycling legend Stuart O’Grady has vowed he wants victory again at Buninyong next month.O’Grady yesterday confirmed he would contest the Cycling Australia National Road Championships blue riband men’s road race – an event he won in 2003 on the same course. His visits to Buninyong have been sparse since his 2003 triumph – a factor he attributes to lack of preparation“I have not done it much because I have not had the form or injury-free lead-up to win it,” O’Grady said.“You have to have everything going well to win at Buninyong.“Lately, I have been able to put in some really hard training. It’s probably cram training and I am feeling pretty good.”O’Grady will ride with Australia’s new and much-hyped international professional cycling unit GreenEDGE at the championships. The 38-year-old is training up to five hours daily at the renowned Willunga Hill area, about 20 kilometres south of Adelaide, in preparation for his assault on Mt Buninyong in the 163km road race on January 8.O’Grady knows the course well.It was the course he conquered to narrowly defeat Queenslander Allan Davis and win his first national road title. Riders will climb the mountain 16 times over a 10.2km circuit.“It would be a bloody proud moment to wear the green and gold colours again,” O’Grady said.“It’s been a long time since I had the honour of wearing the Australian jersey in the big European races and I’m sure I would do it justice again.“It was a really special victory for me when I won the title in 2003.”O’Grady has twice worn the Tour de France leader’s jersey for a total of eight days – in 1998 and 2001 – and boasts a winning record on track and road that would be beyond most cyclists’ wildest expectations. On the track he has won gold, silver and two bronze medals at the Olympics, four gold, two silver and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games, and two gold and two bronze at the world championships. His road triumphs are even greater and include: his famous victory in the 2007 Paris-Roubaix Classic, three Tour de France stages, a stage of the Tour of Spain, dual Tour Down Under winner, Tour of Britain in 1998 and Herald Sun Tour in 2008.He says the Australian championships at Buninyong would ultimately come down to who had the best legs on the day.The championships will be contested across the Ballarat region over six days, from January 5 to 10.Sturt Street criteriums launch the championships on a Thursday evening, January 5.Women’s elite and men’s under-23 road races will be at Buninyong on the Saturday with the men’s road race to follow on Sunday.Learmonth will host time trials on January 10.SBS will screen a three-hour live telecast of the men’s road race, starting at 2pm.
