International star's title bid in Ballarat today

10 Feb, 2012 11:24 PM
INTERNATIONAL cyclist Shannon McCurley makes a bid for a state title in Ballarat today.

McCurley joins forces with Laine Hammond in the Victorian Elite Women’s Madison Championship at the Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club track carnival.

McCurley carries an eclectic background into the event, which is the feature event on the opening day of the two-day Ballarat Spokes Festival.

The 19-year-old grew up in Gippsland, has trained with the Malaysian national squad and in 2010 represented Ireland for the first time at a World Cup track meet.

Having Irish-born parents enables her to wear the all-green of Ireland.

McCurley initially made an impact on the road, winning a gold and three bronze medals at the Australian Junior Road Cycling Championships in 2008.

She went on to be the Victorian Junior Cyclist of the Year.

McCurley is now Ireland’s number one female track cyclist, with her next international assignment expected to be the scratch race at the world titles in Melbourne in April.

Hammond from Northcote is a member of the Victorian elite women’s track team.

Jessica Mundy is defending her state madison title in combination with Stacey Riedel.

Since winning the championship in Ballarat last year, Mundy has gone on to take out the Oceania under-19 road race title and represent Australia in the road race at the world junior road championships in Denmark.

She has also begun this year impressively, with a silver medal in the under-19 points race and bronze in the under-17 scratch race at the national track championships in Adelaide.

Emerging stars, South Australian visitor Miles Scotson and Victorian Jack Cummings, are among the best credential riders in the Victorian Elite Men’s Madison Championship.

Scotson was this week named in the Australian team for the world track championships in New Zealand in August.

Cummings is a reigning world and national champion.

He was a member of the pursuit team at last year’s world junior track championships in Russia and has won the past two national under-19 team pursuit titles.

Scotson teams up with Robert-Jon McCarthy in the hope of making it back-to-back Victorian madison championships.

Cummings rides with reigning national under-19 scratch race champion Evan Hull.
