06 Jan, 2010 12:40 PM
SOUTH Australian Rohan Dennis is the new Scody Australian Open Road Cycling Championships men’s under-23 time trial champion.

He covered the 28-kilometre circuit at Buninyong in 36 minutes, 13.27 seconds this morning.

World junior road time trial champion Luke Durbridge from Western Australia was second, with Michael Matthews, of the ACT, third.

Dennis clinched the gold medal with an average speed of 46.38km/h.

He had just 0.21 seconds to spare over Durbridge.

Dennis, 19, described the time trial as his ''pet ''‘ event’.

This is his fourth national time trial title, having also been under-17 (twice) and under-19 champion.

Ballarat’s Rhys Gillett, who was the fifth rider to start, was the early pacesetter in 39:24.18.

He finished 14th.
