You’d need a crystal ball for that. Either that or a bit of guess work and a thick skin.
The Ballarat Football League kicks off for most its clubs this weekend so it’s a worthy time to take a punt on our top 20 for the year ahead. At least this year we’ve already had one match, giving us the opportunity to judge players from Darley and Melton South — and cheat a little. A bit of insider trading, so to speak.
Last year about this time I had a few speculatives based on reputations carried over from other leagues.
While there were a couple who repaid the investment, such as Jay Cheep (I got him cheap, geddit?) and Matthew Bilton, there were a couple that didn’t quite live up to hype.
At the other end of the scale, there were some blue chips I might have, well, forgotten in my initial calculations. One of them won the Henderson Medal. Ouch.
This year’s list errs towards those we’ve already seen in action. Hopefully that means fewer mistakes will be made this time, although you wouldn’t bet on it.
That’s the nature of the market. Tread carefully or you might lose your shirt.
WHO MADE THE TOP 20?
