HAWTHORN midfielder Brad Sewell suffered a broken collarbone as the Hawks lost to North Melbourne by 40 points in an AFL practice match in Ballarat on Saturday.
The Hawks confirmed yesterday that Sewell fractured his right collarbone in a first quarter incident at Eureka Stadium.
It should have been an enjoyable homecoming for the former Newlyn and North Ballarat Rebels player, but the injury soured the day.
He will now miss the start of the AFL home and away season.
Sewell was not Hawthorn’s injury blow out of the NAB Challenge, which went to the Kangaroos 12.11 (83) to 6.7 (43).
Ruckman Simon Taylor broke a leg and will sidelined for four months.
Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson said Taylor appeared to be injured when some slipped under him at a boundary throw in.
Taylor had surgery on Sunday to have a plate inserted.
The Sewell and Taylor setbacks come just days after boom recruit Shaun Burgoyne strained a hamstring.
North Melbourne had only minor injury concerns from the practice match with Ed Lower heading to the rooms early with ankle trouble, while Gavin Urquhart played out the game with his left knee strapped after suffering a knock in the first quarter.
