AFL: Kangaroos to go for it in Ballarat hit-out

29 Jan, 2010 12:36 AM
NORTH Melbourne will break new ground in Ballarat on Wednesday night.

First-year coach Brad Scott will oversee the Kangaroos under match conditions for the first time - giving the football world a sneak preview of North Melbourne's new game plan.

The Kangaroos will play an intra-club match under lights at Eureka Stadium on the opening day of their AFL community camp in Ballarat.

Reigning best and fairest Andrew Swallow said Scott had introduced new ideas and this hit-out would be the first opportunity to implement them beyond the training track.

"We've worked on it, now it's time to put it into action," he said.

Swallow said there was nothing radical about the way Scott wanted North Melbourne to play.

"It's a lot to do with our back set up ... and pressure."

He said the practice match would be the first chance for new players to show Scott what they had to offer.

Swallow said there would be no holding back.

"It's going to be on ... full-on."

He said there would be players wanting to consolidate their positions, youngsters eager to prove their worth and others wanting to step up keen to show the coach they had what it took - especially with the opening round of the pre-season NAB Cup only a matter of weeks away.

North Melbourne kicks off against Geelong on Sunday, February 21.

Swallow said there was real excitement at North Melbourne this year with a new coach, state-of-the-art training facilities, and an exciting bunch of recruits.

The abbreviated practice match is scheduled to begin at 7pm and comprise two halves.

With North Melbourne's whole list making the trip to Ballarat, only a handful of players with injury concerns are expected to miss the match.

These include first-year player Ben Cunnington, Daniel Wells and Alan Obst.

The Kangaroos arrive in Ballarat on Wednesday afternoon for the three-day camp.

The AFL community camps are traditionally just two days, but at the Kangaroos' request it has been extended to allow them to further foster the partnership they have struck with the City of Ballarat.

North Melbourne is keen to cement its commitment to the Ballarat region through short-term objectives, which include the development of a community relationship and helping Ballarat secure a regional AFL game and possibly an NAB Cup match.

Although in its early stages, the partnership has already led to an NAB challenge match being allocated to Ballarat for either March 5 or 6 this year
