AFL: Swallow new North Melbourne Football Club captain

03 Feb, 2012 11:32 PM
NORTH Melbourne’s new skipper Andrew Swallow will have his first real chance to show his on-field leadership in Ballarat next week.

The Kangaroos have an intra-club hit-out scheduled at Eureka Stadium on Tuesday afternoon as part of the club’s two-day community camp in the city.

News of Swallow’s captaincy, unveiled at midday yesterday, was well received in the North Ballarat Roosters’ camp where he was part of the club’s inaugural Victorian Football League premiership in 2008.

Swallow is the first player to become captain out of the Roosters-Kangaroos’ six-year partial alignment.

His promotion came the same day Collingwood announced it would reappoint Nick Maxwell, who was drafted from the Roosters in 2002, for a fourth-consecutive season as Magpies’ skipper.

Roosters’ coach Gerard FitzGerald said the club was extremely proud of Swallow in his new role.

“We always get excited when one of the North Melbourne players who has continued their AFL journey with us goes on to achieve success,” FitzGerald said. “Andrew was part of a very special premiership with us, the inaugural one.

“He’s an impressive young man – very dedicated, highly coachable and determined.”

FitzGerald texted his congratulations to the midfielder soon after the news broke.

At 24 years old, Swallow continues a Kangaroos’ tradition of promoting young leaders.

North’s youngest captain was David Dench at 20 years and 221 days in 1972, while Kangaroos great Wayne Carey was 21 years and 303 days when appointed in 1993.

Midfielder Jack Ziebell, who turns 21 later this month, and Ballarat’s Drew Petrie have been named vice-captains after both being touted as strong contenders for the top on-field job.

Swallow replaces veteran Brent Harvey, captain for the past three seasons, but the 33-year-old will remain in the leadership group at North and act as a mentor.

Swallow said his leadership style would evolve over time. “I don’t think the captaincy will change me as a player or leader,” he said.

“I like to lead by the way I play. I’m really looking forward to the future at this club with the great young list we’ve got.”
