 Hollioake Medallion for Jarrod Edwards

Hollioake Medallion for Jarrod Edwards

03 Feb, 2010 12:32 AM
VICTORIAN Country Football League captain Jarrod Edwards has collected his first Hollioake Medallion as Ballarat Sportsmens Club team player of the year.

The star Redan on-baller continued to create history last season with an unprecedented fourth consecutive RegionalOne Ballarat Football League best and fairest award.

This built on Edwards' record as the first player in BFL history to win the Henderson Medal three times.

Three of the four medals, including 2009, were captured in premiership seasons for Redan.

Edwards, also a finalist in the sportsperson of the year award, was humbled by his latest honour.

"I come here not expecting to win anything, especially against Olympians _ I'm just a local country footballer who loves playing football," Edwards said.

"I had a really enjoyable time in the game last season.

"Footy's all about enjoyment at this stage of my career. Just working hard and trying my best."

Edwards issued a "big thank-you" to his Redan premiership team-mates and the players he captained at VCFL and BFL representative levels.

"To captain Vic Country was a huge honour _ to have earnt the respect of (coach) Peter Knights," Edwards said.

Edwards' focus for the 2010 football season, set to kick off in April, was to keep helping younger players finding their feet in the game.

Individually, his own pre-season was travelling to plan.

"I just haven't started to think about footy too much yet," Edwards said.

"I'm big on trying to get fit at the moment."

Edwards' Hollioake Medallion, recognising excellence in team sport on and off the field, keeps the award in football and follows 2008 winner, the North Ballarat Roosters.
