BALLARAT'S 2010 Victorian Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation football and netball carnival has been hailed as VAYSAR's best in 30 years.Carnival co-ordinator Tony Lovett said the city had set the standard the last time it hosted the indigenous sporting event in 1998 and had lifted it to another level on the weekend.More than 400 footballers and about 300 netballers from across Victoria converged on the carnival, which is regarded as the biggest annual Aboriginal sporting event in the state.Lovett said Ballarat's venues for the carnival, which included Eureka Stadium, Marty Busch Reserve and the Ballarat Netball Centre, had provided an ideal setting for the young footballers and netballers to showcase their skills."Ballarat set a standard in 1998 with the use of the Eureka Stadium and Ballarat is still setting the standard," Lovett said. "The only venue of a higher level might have been Skilled Stadium in 2003, but in terms of atmosphere this was at a higher standard than that."I heard a lot of praise for the netball courts too. "The standard of football and netball at this carnival has increased in recent years, and the umpires commented on the weekend just how high the standard was."Yesterday, we filled the stands at Eureka Stadium and we estimate about 1500 people being there so that's as big a crowd as we've had." Ballarat teams dominated the netball competition.Gina's Dream Team Eels, named in honour of Gina Kickett and coached by Belinda Hayden, won the A-grade and C-grade competitions. In A-grade, the Eels defeated Black Eagles 40-29, while in C-grade the Eels were far too strong for Sunraysia, 50-13.The Ballarat Wanderers defeated Rumbalara 36-22 to win the B-grade netball. Tameeka Muir was the highest goal scorer in B-grade while Nicky Bell was named the best player in the grand final. In division one football, the Fitzroy Stars' dynasty came to an end, beaten by Warma Turtles 19.11 (125) to 4.6 (30) in the division one final on Sunday. The Stars had won the previous five in a row."Maybe the stars were fading a bit and didn't have the fitness to run the match out while the Warma Turtles were a young side," Lovett said. In division two, Lake Condah Wanderers beat Budja Budja 12.6 (78) to 11.4 (70).
