IT WAS a blue ribbon day for Ballarat District bowlers at Bacchus Marsh on Sunday as they captured both the ladies’ and men’s pairs championships of the Central Victoria Bowls Region. Donna Robinson and Tanya Hearn of Daylesford performed consistently to defeat Bacchus Marsh pair Catherine Pevitt and Suzanne Banks, 21 to 16, in the morning semi-final round. The afternoon final looked as though it would be another close tussle, with the Dunolly duo Loretta Parker and Margaret Davies drawing within three shots after 12 ends, but Robinson and Hearn captured the match convincingly 19 shots to nine. Sebastopol’s Ian Warner and Mick Morgan made every post a winner in their semi-final clash against Woodend’s Alan Maher and his son Tyler, picking up several multiple scores on the way to claim a 21 to 10 win. The final of the men’s championship saw Dunolly pair Walter Curson and Ian Flett taking the match right up to their Sebastopol opponents. Morgan and then Warner produced some of the best shots of the match as they scrambled to a 12 to nine shot win with one end to play. With his final bowl, Warner drew the perfect shot about 10 centimetres behind jack and Curson was not able to dislodge it, leaving the Sebastopol pair 13 shots to nine winners. The winners now both go on to the state titles in April.
