A SWAG of medals against interstate rivals has capped
off a stellar season for YMCA Gymnastics Ballarat.
National level six gymnasts Megan Tresize, Olivia Peskett
and level seven athlete Isabella McKay each captured
gold in trans-Bass competition in Tasmania during the
weekend.
Their effort follows level nine club-mate Ellie Smith’s
success, who competed at national championships
earlier in the season.
Tresize and Peskett were part of the winning Victorian
level six team in the trans-Bass meet.
Beam was where Tresize topped the ranks in Victorian
championships to help qualify but bars was where she
netted gold this time about.
Peskett missed gold for best all-rounder by 0.15 points —
less than the penalty for a bent knee—but claimed gold
on beam.
She also won silver for her floor routine and bronze for
bars and vault.
McKay was awarded gold for her level seven team’s
effort at the weekend and also brought home gold for her
floor routine.
The girls were back in hard training at the University of
Ballarat last night alongside Smith, who is preparing for
her national level 10.
Smith was the youngest athlete on the Victorian team
this season.
She ranked second overall in nationals.
YMCA head coach Briony Yoshida said the girls’ season
performance had been impressive for a small, regional
gymnastics club.
‘‘It’s wonderful to see the success of the girls and that all
their hard work and training pays off,’’ Yoshida said.
‘‘It’s definitely great for a regional club to be competitive
against not only metro clubs but other states.’’
The club is preparing to travel to the Sunshine Coast
in this month’s school holidays for the Caloundra Challenge.
Yoshida said it was a great way to finish the season.
The trans-Bass competition is a lead-up event for young
gymnasts before they are old enough to qualify for national championships.
