BALLARAT Miners left their best until last to swamp Dandenong in overtime in an all-South East Australian Basketball League east conference clash at Dandenong on Saturday night.
Tariq Naqqash led a three-point rampage as the Wes Davidson Real Estate Miners broke their away-from-home duck, 81-76.
Naqqash made three triples in a row to open the fifth period after the scores had been locked at 63-all and Jared Scoines sank another shot from outside the arc.
In a remarkable game, Ballarat led for only five seconds of regular time - late in the second quarter.
The only other time the Rangers did not make the front running was the last 29 seconds, after Jamal Brown tied up the scores.
It was just the outcome Miners head coach Guy Molloy wanted, ahead a mini-break for the Easter holiday weekend.
As well as being an important win on the road, it gives Ballarat a 3-2 record and places them firmly in the east conference top four.
Molloy said the longer the game went, the stronger the Miners became, with Dandenong showing signs of tiring - a distinct advantage in overtime.
This was a factor in Ballarat fighting back after scoring only six points in the third term and then being 13 points down midway through the last quarter.
Molloy said although the points did not flow as well as he would have liked early in the second half, he was not unhappy with his players' execution.
"The ball just wouldn't drop, in contrast to overtime."
He said Dandenong was always going to be a tough nut to crack - being without a win and hoping to break through in front of a home crowd.
"We had to be sure we matched their energy."
Molloy said the Miners had still not played up to the same level on the road as they had at home, but the improvement continued.
The Miners will vary their training routine over next 10 days - training only Wednesday and Thursday this week and then Monday and Tuesday next week before facing Kilsyth at the Minerdome on Wednesday, April 7.
