CHRISTAN Casella has high hopes for his new team Triumph.
The Ballarat motorcyclist claimed his maiden win in the Australian Supersport Championship at Phillip Island, and already has sights set on the series championship.
Casella, riding under the ARK racing banner on the Triumph Daytona 675, stormed to victory in his debut ride for his new team, before finishing second in round two to sit just one point behind Suzuki's Troy Herfoss on the championship leader board.
He was confident of further success throughout the series.
"I think the bike's only going to get a lot better and I think we're going to win the championship this year," Casella said.
"The bike is a really good bike and the team is working really well together.
"It's all starting to come together, all the hard training is starting to pay off."
The 24-year-old's win is believed to be the first time a non-Japanese bike has won a championship race and is also the first for the Triumph brand.
Casella delved into the road-racing circuit about five years ago, winning the prestigious Reece Bancell Scholarship in 2007 to effectively launch his career.
"That gave us a kick-start and gave me a relationship with Yamaha, which I rode for in 2007, 2008 and 2009," Casella said.
"Last year I was in a satellite Yamaha team, called the Yamaha racing development team.
"It was not factory funded, just factory supported."
But when he was contacted by the owner of the new Triumph team, the former Damascus College student jumped at the offer.
"I just hope to build a career with Triumph and hopefully move to World Supersport or the Moto 2 class," he said.
"I want to win a championship here and move overseas with Triumph, just keep winning races and taking the next step."
Round two of the six-leg Australian Supersport Championship will be held in Hidden Valley, Darwin between April 8-11.
