BALLARAT teenagers made a splash in the Victorian Lifesaving Championships to cap off a busy season competing on beaches across the state.
Sophie Thomas, representing Torquay, and Harry Jones, for Anglesea, each captured gold at the titles in Lakes Entrance.
Thomas was awarded Surf Lifesaving Victoria's under-14 female water champion for a stellar season's work.
She continued her strong form at the state titles to pocket gold for the under-14 ironwoman and surf teams events, silver in the board and board relay, and bronze in the aqua cameron relay.
Her brother Nick came close to winning gold at the meet.
Nick netted four silvers - under-19 board relay, under-17 ironman, board rescue and tube relay - and bronze in the under-17 board relay.
Jones also collected a swag of medals, including gold in the under-15 surf teams, silver in the cameron relay and bronze in the board rescue and board relay.
He will hit Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast later this week, where he has entered the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships.
Fellow Ballarat competitor Tom Toohey, representing Anglesea, will contest the national titles after strong efforts in beach events at Lakes Entrance, including the sprint, flags and beach relay.
All four athletes adapt their training in Ballarat to ensure they are in top form for weekend competitions all summer.
The state titles are gruelling with often 14-16 races each day in a mix of heats, semi-finals and finals.
Nick Thomas said a silver in the ironman was the highlight of his summer, drawing on strength in swimming, on the board and on the beach and leaving little room for error in transitions.
The key, he said, was to keep training as much as possible.
