BALLARAT Miners defied the odds to stun south conference championship contender Hobart in the South East Australian Basketball League in Hobart last night.
The Wes Davidson Real Estate Miners produced a big last quarter to overrun the Chargers 77-70.
The upset ended an eight-game winning streak by Hobart and thwarted the Chargers' hopes of climbing to second position.
Ballarat now has an opportunity to complete a rare double in Tasmania, with its last game of the season against North West Tasmania at Ulverstone tonight.
The Miners went to Hobart undermanned and down on confidence after being blown out of play-off contention in the previous two weeks.
Ironically, it was Hobart which sowed the seed for Ballarat's demise in the east conference finals race. The Chargers defeated the Miners by 15 points two rounds ago, with coach Anthony Stewart and Chuck Long knocking down
a string of three-pointers in Ballarat.
There was no sign of anything like that this time with Stewart getting only eight points and Long shooting Hobart's two triples.
With import Drake Reed already back in the United States, Ballarat used only seven players, but it was enough as veteran Jamal Brown produced close to his best effort of the season and NBL-bound Jared Scoines showed why
he is off to Sydney Kings.
The Chargers did threaten to get away when they opened up an 11-point lead midway through the third quarter, but Ballarat stuck at it and ultimately wore down the hot favourite.
Miners head coach Guy Molloy said he could not be prouder of the players.
