BFL: Panthers add bite with duo

IN WHAT Melton South coach Troy Scoble says is a "tough recruiting market", he is confident he has found the right players to become Panthers for the 2010 RegionalOne Ballarat Football League season.

The Panthers have lured two recruits with Victorian Football League experience in a bid to bolster their midfield and tall stock.

Former Williamstown key position player Brendan Tyquin and hard-working former Werribee Tiger Doug Thomas have joined the Panthers' line-up.

Key midfielder Cameron McLeod has been welcomed back to the Panthers after a season out of the game with work commitments.

Tyquin has been signed to replace departing ruckman Mark O'Day, who is moving to Torquay for work.

The 22-year-old arrives from the Seagulls via a transitional season with Glenorden in the metropolitan Western Region Football League.

Tyquin went to Williamstown via the Western Jets in 2006 and spent three seasons (2006-08) on its list.

Thomas, known for his fitness at VFL club Werribee, spent last season making his mark with Hoppers Crossing, also in Western Region's division one.

The Panthers have also secured key forward Michael Spooner who, like Tyquin, is a former Western Jets graduate and familiar with other former Jets in the Panthers' mix. Spooner has been recruited from Western Region club

St Albans.

Scoble said the club moved quickly to top up its experience and organise its list for a strong pre-season.

"You've got to make the most of missing finals and we started going through those those normal processes the first day we were out of contention in September," Scoble said.

"We started training the first week in November and realise the club has got a fair bit of work to do on its fitness base before Christmas."

The Panthers slipped out of the finals race this season, finishing a clear seventh and are determined to re-stake their claim in the top six.

Scoble said the club's focus remained on developing within its ranks, including a target of 85 to 90 per cent of home-grown talent in open-age football.

Fifteen young Panthers made their senior BFL debut in 2009, a season in which the Panthers sported 31 players aged under-20.

Scoble said most of those had notched-up 50 senior games and he hoped they would take their game to the next level, helped by the Panthers' new recruits.

"We're really fortunate with the calibre of players we have," Scoble said. "We're excited with out young list."

Tyquin spent 2007 and 2008 with Altona in the WRFL. The bloke played a handful of reserves games at Willy in 2006 then spent the remainder of the year in Hoppers Crossing reserves. Ask his team mates at Glenorden from this year where he went after four games. The bloke is a waste of space and money. Best of luck having him train or move from the goal square.
