TOTAL Girl soccer tournament organisers were keen to attract plenty of top female junior players from across Victoria to the weekend's all-girl carnival at Ballarat Grammar.
The results show they succeeded admirably, although partially at the expense of the Ballarat teams.
Ballarat Grammar's under-12B team, Ballarat North's Comets in under-14A, and North United B in under-14C, were home-town winners across the 15 levels of competition, as teams from Melbourne and from near the Murray River also plundered the silverware.
Successful raiders included, appropriately enough, the Moama Raiders in under-16A and under-16B, along with Firbank Grammar in under-10 competition, Sandringham City in under 12A and under-13A, and Whitehorse in under-15A.
Total Girl organiser Laurelle Sommers said the success of teams from as far afield as Langwarrin and Moama showed how highly regarded the tournament is across the state.
"That's why we have three divisions in some age groups. We get a lot of top players from across the state, but we also had a lot of players, particularly from the local clubs, who were playing for fun," she said.
"We designed the tournament so players of different levels compete and enjoy themselves without getting thrashed. Looking at the results, I think we achieved that pretty well."
More than 1100 players, aged seven to 16, were involved in what is the largest all-girl soccer tournament in Australia.
Melbourne Victory W-League player Seline Kuralay, who attended the event, told organisers she was surprised by the size of the turnout.
"From a local club point of view, we managed to recruit 12 new players to the sport, which is what this is all about," Sommers said.
