SO CLOSE, but yet so far last season, Queenscliff can finally claim to be the best in the Ballarat-Geelong premier bowls competition.
The Cliffers, who lost after an extra end in 2008-09, made a mockery of this season's finals series with a thumping 121-78 win over Sebastopol in yesterday's grand final. The belting followed the minor premiers' 56-shot semi-final win over Highton.
Cliffers skip Barrie Close, who had a three-shot win over Rob Baker's side, said the 46-10 thrashing by Steve Sullivan's rink was the driving force behind the success.
He said an early advantage after the first end across the board helped get the jump on the Kookaburras, who trailed at afternoon tea and were constantly chasing throughout the day.
"Steve Sullivan's rink performed so well that they set it up for us and really broke the back of the match," Close said.
"In the end Sebastopol's rinks had to be chasing numbers, and that doesn't always work."
Queenscliff finished by winning three of the four rinks for the day, with Barry Gladman recording a five-shot win over Jess Thomas' team.
Scott Roberts' outfit was the only Kookaburras rink to claim success, a 23-21 win over Larry Donohue's side.
Close said yesterday's victory had gone a long way to erasing the disappointment of last year's loss to Victoria.
"We were terribly disappointed about it last year. We knew it was a very tight. We were devastated, really," Close said.
Close believed the Queenscliff bowlers handled the conditions at Ocean Grove better than their rivals, with the green running at 15.25 seconds.
The premiership is Queenscliff's first premier bowls title, but continues a barren run for Sebastopol, who have now finished runners-up on three occasions since 2001-02.
