A COSTLY slip-up has given Sebastopol a wake-up call two rounds out from Ballarat-Geelong premier division finals.
Central Wendouree snagged the upset win against Sebas with an 18-shot victory in enemy territory.
Rinks were tied two apiece but the solid work of Sebas skippers Aaron Cook and Rob Baker was not enough to negate the lowly-ranked Central Wendouree's dominant efforts.
Baker said Sebas had been wary of Central leading into the match but "silly shots" have now forced Sebas to work harder for a solid top-four footing.
"We were expecting a tough match. It was very tough against them last time we met," Baker said.
"Now we need to get at least two rinks up out of the next two matches to secure a spot in the four.
"We are still hoping to snag second but we will have to rely on other results and improve our own game a lot."
Central's Bill Durond skipped teammates Peter Orr, David Denham and John Nunn to finish 25 ahead of Scott Roberts' men.
Sebas' Baker, Noel Sutherland, Travis Hedger and David Moloney tried valiantly to even the field with a 13-shot win against Col Wright.
Baker's team was poised 13 shots up at tea and he was disappointed to not have increased the margin.
Opposition lead Paul Ryan lifted his game up a notch to thwart Baker's team plans.
Play was tight between Sebas' Aaron Cook and Central's Tim Wright with Cook snaring a four-shot win.
Cook and teammates Harvey Pearce, Tony Gutteridge and Brett Forrest were about five shots down at tea and worked solidly after the break to claw back in front.
Sebas skipper Jess Thomas lost a gamble to Central's Greg Brown.
Thomas' team went for numbers on the final end in a desperate bid to win the rink and instead lost vital ground overall for Sebastopol. Brown, Ethan Wright, Allen Stephens and Nick Hoare surged out for a 10-shot victory.
Sebastopol has dropped to fourth place with a 24-point buffer from Geelong West, whose ranking was boosted with a 40-shot win against cellar-dweller Ballarat Memorial Sport.
Top-four contenders Highton and Victoria have traded ladder positions after the Geelong-based club snaffled a six-shot win in their showdown.
Victoria's Barry Clark's 15-shot win against Craig Hodges was the only Victoria rink victory, forcing Highton to grind out a tough overall victory.
