CENTRAL Wendouree bowlers Col Wright, John Nunn, Greg Brown and Garry Carbury are the Ballarat District Bowls Division Men’s Fours Champions for 2011-12. Playing on the synthetic at City Oval Bowling Club, they defeated Noel Sutherland, Mick Morgan, Scott Roberts and Ian Warner from the Sebastopol Bowling Club. Carbury and co. had a thrilling finish to their semi-final when they came from two down with two ends to play to defeat Barry Clarke’s Victoria Bowling Club four 17-13 after the 18 ends. With the weather changing from sunny to cloudy, Sebastopol was playing catch-up right from the first three ends, where Central Wendouree led 3-1. Sutherland was leading with consistent close drawing, and the umpire’s measure on the fourth end made it three all. The Bears picked up six shots over the next three ends as Col Wright and Greg Brown found their line and length to be within a foot of the jack. As it often happens in bowls, Sebastopol lifted and collected a pair and a triple on ends eight and nine as Roberts trailed the jack and Warner drew a toucher, to be only one shot behind at 9-8. From then on, Central Wendouree asserted their strengths and stretched their lead to 16-8. Wright was homing in on the jack as the lead, Nunn playing position bowls and Brown and Carbury adding the finishing touches, drawing resting touchers and promoting their own bowls. Sebastopol managed a pair of singles on ends 14 and 15, but Central Wendouree closed the match out to win 19-10. The Central Wendouree team will now represent the BDBD in the regional final in Ballarat on Sunday, January 15, 2012
