Bowls: Sebas comes to grief on North's slick plastic

08 Nov, 2009 11:01 PM
BALLARAT NORTH made it back-to-back wins at home with a 23-shot victory against Sebastopol in round six of Ballarat Regional Bowls Association division one on Saturday.

Anton Bozic led the charge for North getting over John Copeman's team, 40-14.

Bozic's three Vic Duka said it was just one of those days where everything went right for the rink.

"The rink I was in had a good win," he said.

"Unfortunately for those (Sebas) blokes they just couldn't handle our slick plastic."

Neil Lloyd-Jones had his first loss for the season as skip, to the tune of six shots against North's Mario Lenkic.

But his men did fight back after trailing 8-20 to only go down by six, 20-26.

"Those blokes just started bowling well and if there were another few ends I would say Mario would have lost the game," Duka said.

North began the better and held a 21-shot lead by the speeches, and held that margin for the rest of the day.

Sebas president Warren Bedggood took the reins of a team for the first time this season, recording a 24-21 triumph over Ken Eppingstall.

He said the side had been chopped and changed, which had "worked in three cases" but unfortunately not in the fourth.

WEBBCONA has jumped into the four on the back of a come-from-behind victory at Ballarat East.

East held a one-shot lead at the break and extended that out to about 10 at the 80-end mark.

But Ian Cross's team picked up a seven and seemed to score numbers at will to move from 19-18 to a 41-18 victory that proved decisive.

Ian Hedger put in a sensational display for East, leading his rink home by 14 shots.

LEARMONTH has leapt to the top of the ladder after handing Victoria its first loss in division one after gaining promotion from division two.

Learmonth was able to finish the stronger, turning a seven-shot advantage after 96 ends into a 101-86 win.

The Vics began well, holding a six-shot lead after just eight ends but found itself 10 down at the break.

Bill Shillito's 13-shot victory proved the difference, with Shillito putting on a fine display of weighted shots, as well as draw bowling.

CITY OVAL has broken through for its first home win of the season, 112-86, against Creswick.

The Hawks held a 15-shot lead at afternoon tea with two teams up and two down.

Craig Ford and co were able to fight back to get the biscuits, 29-24.

Terry O'Farrell has continued his sensational form leading for Gavin Mann, the rink getting up by 23 shots. After a small hiccup last week, Gerry Flapper's four returned to the winners' list with a 28-19 result over Chris Smith, who was brought up from division three.

AVENUE blew the visiting Mount Xavier away on the Bacchus Marsh plastic with a 55-shot pasting.

Avenue led from go to woe and was 30 shots up at smoko.

Rodney "Rocket" Keith was a big 42-11 victor over Luke Glasson and co. Chris McDonald earned the X-men's only point.

After leading 10-0, Bill Hawken fought back to earn a draw on his 25th end.

LADDER: LEARMONTH 74 points, VICTORIA 72, AVENUE 68, WEBBCONA 52, Ballarat North 52, Mt Xavier 50, City Oval 49, Creswick 45, Ballarat East 43, Sebastopol 35.
