BRBA: Kookaburras do it hard

08 Nov, 2009 11:00 PM
SEBASTOPOL had a "far from impressive" 12-shot win over Torquay at home on Saturday.

Sebas skip Aaron Cook said with Torquay missing a skipper and third - Daryl Kitchin and Gary Banks respectively - the Kookaburras should have done a lot better.

"At the end of the day, a win's a win but it was far from impressive as far as I'm concerned," he said.

The Kookas held a seven-shot advantage when the speeches took place and then extended it to 10-15 for the rest of the afternoon.

Cook said Torquay's Gary Wakefield put in an "unbelievable" display of leading with 18 touchers for the day.

"You waste one or two bowls trying to get some room or move them," Cook said.

"Their lead was just so dominant."

Shane Cashill ended his season with Sebas on a high as part of Jess Thomas's 31-21 success over Peter Barnes.

Work commitments and travel from Warrnambool have finally taken their toll.

It will be interesting to see who comes in to take his place next week.

WEBBCONA'S game against Highton finished perfectly in balance.

Craig Hodges' seven-shot win over Tom Clarke cancelled out Rod Brehaut's victory for Webbcona over Craig Elliott of the same margin.

Highton's Cal Inderberg and Webbcona's Ash McArthur both won by 14 shots.

A BRILLIANT display by Queenscliff skip Barrie Close has guided the visitors home by seven shots.

Time and time again, Close put in a big bowl against Shaun Clark's team - on three consecutive ends he was five down, only to draw the shot and break the Victorians' hearts.

The Vics had three rinks up, but they could not cover Close's 30-8 success, after leading by three shots at smoko.

Victoria second Noel McGuigan put in a solid display in Barry Clark's 24-21 victory over Barry Gladman, but no one on the green came close to Queenscliff's master bowler.

BALLARAT Memorial Sports has squandered a perfect opportunity to put some breathing space between itself and Central Wendouree in the bottom half of the ladder.

BMS was 22 shots up against Ocean Grove at the tea break but dropped numbers in quick succession immediately afterwards to give the Grovers a sniff.

The home side was able to reel BMS in and then get away with all 18 points, 94-76.

Roy Crawley's four looked to be carrying on its form off the previous week when it had a big win, leading 17-5.

But as the tide changed overall, Paul Cameron and co swept in for a 22-20 triumph.

Mick Sloper must have felt there was a glitch in the matrix, once again losing on the last bowl when Ocean Grove's Peter Nixon put the kitty in the ditch to win the rink by a shot.

THE new-look Geelong West has continued its winning ways with a 28-shot victory over Central Wendouree at home on Saturday.

Two big rink wins by Ian Bush over Lindsay Trounce, 31-11, and Lance Kelly against John Nunn, 34-13, set up the win.

Tim Wright's men continued their good form with a two-shot victory, while Col Johnson was an 11-shot victor in his first game at skip this season.

The Bears were in the game until the sandwiches, trailing by just five shots after 60 ends, but West was able to pull away once it had a cup of tea under its belt.

Central was missing four players - including skips Bill Durand and Greg Brown - and will be hoping they are available for this week's "Ballarat derby" with Sebas.

LADDERS: QUEENSCLIFF 93 points, HIGHTON 75, GEELONG WEST 66, VICTORIA 65, Sebastopol 61, Webbcona 50, Ocean Grove 46, BMS 34, Central Wendouree 27, Torquay 23.
