BALLARAT Miners smashed the reigning South East Australian Basketball League east conference champion Geelong Supercats by 25 points at the Minerdome last night.
Inspired by a new hero and former Geelong star Jamal Brown, the RetireInvest Ballarat Miners sent the home crowd into a frenzy as they saluted 125-100.
The Miners controlled most of the game - Geelong led just once, late in the first quarter - but the quality and superior size of the Supercats meant it was still up for grabs going into the last quarter.
Not for long though.
Brown saw to that.
Determined to prove the Supercats wrong after they dumped him at the end of the last season, Brown shot two early baskets to stretch Ballarat's advantage to double figures and that was where it stayed.
Brown led a last-term demolition of Geelong with eight points and a series of vigorous celebrations as he savoured every moment of Ballarat's most significant win of the season to date.
And he was not alone, with Marcus Toney-El and captain Brett Goodgame also each contributing eight points, while youngsters Ricky Henderson collected his first SEABL triple double and Adam McSwain shot his way to 24 points in a super display.
Henderson scored 12 points, had 10 assists and 10 rebounds in a performance which typified the whole Miners roster for the night.
Ballarat now rises to four wins in fives games in the east conference, while stunned south conference rival Geelong was sent packing after its second loss in five appearances.
Miners coach Shane Mathison appeared outwardly calm after what might be a season defining victory, but there was no prouder person at the Minerdome as his players erupted in finals-like celebrations.
"Fantastic. They played their hearts out," Mathison said in praising his players. He was rapt with the emotion and passion displayed by the Miners - elements he will be looking for more of as the campaign continues.
While Geeong has to front up against Albury-Wodonga at Albury tonight, Ballarat 's next assignment is not for another seven days when it meets North West Tasmania again at home.
Other SEABL results last night: Southern Districts 105 d Hobart 94, Mt Gambier 95 d Frankston 93.
