WHEN United States power forward Crystal Coston signed with the Ballarat Lady Miners one of the first things her new teammates learnt about her was her nickname _ "Tuff".
Coston lived up to that tag to lead Ballarat Community Health Lady Miners to a hard-fought 84-73 win over Frankston in the South East Australian Basketball League in Ballarat on Saturday.
Playing in front of her fiance, who arrived from the United States last week for a brief visit, Coston produced a stand-out performance with an uninterrupted 40 minutes.
Coston toughed the game out with 32 points and 26 rebounds.
And the Lady Miners needed every bit of her contribution to get over a determined Frankston.
Ballarat coach Kym Cassells said Coston was "fantastic".
"She showed some real agility offensively and defensively ... they were big opponents."
Frankston was initially the team to become rattled, with coach Stephen Matthews in the opening quarter calling for atmospheric music to be silenced when the Lady Blues were in offence.
Ballarat was playing a controlled brand of basketball to be 11 points up.
Doherty provided some early spark with two three-point plays and then it was Michelle Musselwhite who led the way.
However, the Lady Miners were unable to maintain the intensity as the silent treatment requested by Frankston began to work.
They lost their focus, eased off the pressure and even for a short while appeared rattled as big Frankston centre Marita Payne stepped up to tighten up the game.
It took a 12-point second quarter and 11-point last quarter from Coston to withstand the Lady Blues' charge.
Her presence was even more important as Musselwhite hit foul trouble after half-time.
Kristy Rinaldi was also solid with Doherty.
This gives Ballarat two wins on end to be on eight in 14 games and still pressing for fourth position going into the Queen's Birthday long weekend break.
The week off is timely for Rinaldi, who re-injured a finger which forced her to miss a game earlier in the season.
