Country Week cricket hit-out

05 Feb, 2010 12:36 AM
A NEW-look bowling attack will be finetuned in a dress rehearsal for Ballarat's Melbourne Country Week opener.

Ballarat-Redan all-rounder Chris Egan, a handy medium-pace bowler, has been added to the mix as Ballarat Cricket Association enters a final selection hit-out against round one opponent Bendigo tomorrow.

The match forms part of the annual Turner-Hollioake Shield, with all BCA representative divisions, down to under-12s, in battle.

Seniors will hit the field at Eastern Oval but Ballarat selectors will be keeping a keen eye on under-21 play at Wendouree, which will feature country week candidates.

Ballarat co-coach Peter Huntly said the match would be a good work-out for his players.

"Bendigo is always strong and gives us a run for our money,'' Huntly said.

"I think we've got a strong batting side but our bowling is yet to be proven ... we need to see where everyone fits in.

"We're serious about winning this title.''

Ballarat is hunting to regain the Victorian Country Cricket League provincial shield after failing to defend the title by three runs last summer.

A first-round win is crucial to Ballarat's campaign and, in the Melbourne Country Week draw released yesterday, Ballarat must wait until day three for a rematch with reigning premier Mornington Peninsula.

The Ballarat line-up remains similar to the team that defeated Castlemaine in Kenmac Shield competition early last month.

Egan is the only inclusion.

Huntly said a clash against Bendigo would demand a higher level of intensity and he was looking for all players to step up and make an impact.

Central Highlands under-21 captain Jarrod Burns and leg spinner James Winnard are among those featuring in the under-21 match who remain in strong contention for Melbourne Country Week selection.

Ballarat will finalise its squad next week with its country week campaign scheduled to start on February 15 against Bendigo at Altona.

* BALLARAT'S under-12 match against Bendigo has be moved to Ballarat High School to ensure all Turner-Hollioake Shield matches will be played on a turf wicket.
