Cricket: Mathews secures breathing space

07 Feb, 2010 12:43 AM
A SIX-wicket haul from Joel Mathews has helped Burrumbeet earn breathing space.

Burrumbeet's 29-run win against fringe-team Dunnstown keeps them in fourth spot in the Ballarat Cricket Association's district division one stakes.

A loss to fifth-placed VRI Delacombe also helped the Burrumbeet campaign.

Mathews kept chipping at the Towners' order all Saturday afternoon to close the two-day match.

Strong fielding offered support.

Burrumbeet captain Dean Mathews said it was an important win as his team heads into a bye and prepares for a final round showdown against competition heavyweight Ballan.

"We all put in, everyone did their bit," Mathews said.

"It's a very handy win and a bit of an exciting time for the club.

"We haven't played finals for a few years."

Mathews said his team's competitive 8-214 was "about par" at Dunnstown.

Towners' opener Stephen Howard provided a solid start with 37 runs but the Towners lacked big hitters to lift the run-rate.

Number-seven bat Kevin Duffy revived the lower-middle order with 31 runs, while tail-ender Jaye Chair added bite with 27 runs.

Burrumbeet's Andre Prenc, Aaron Wilson and Joel Ritchens each chipped in with wickets to polish off the Towners.

The bowling attack will be put to the test in the final round against Ballan, who more than doubled the target set for them by Lucas in a top-of-the-table bout.

Ballan's Mick Loughnane was in devastating form with 83 runs while a defiant 80-run eighth-wicket partnership between Noel Heafield (53) and captain Michael Carr (33 not out) signalled a warning to the competition.
