Cricket: Ringin steps up to mark for Vic Country

05 Feb, 2010 12:38 AM
NAPOLEONS-Sebastopol paceman Matt Ringin is determined to prove his worth as he takes a step up in representative cricket.

Ringin will line-up for Victorian Country Cricket League in an under-21 clash against Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union in Seymour tomorrow.

Maryborough's Sam Bartlett is the only other Central Highlands cricket in the squad after the pair impressed in the VCCL grand final last month.

This was the first summer Ringin has represented the Highlanders at under-21 level and he looked forward to testing his game against the state's best.

While metro players remain an unknown for Ringin, he was focussed on his own game.

"Metro is usually pretty strong, but in the country boys, there are always a few hidden talents - and they're good, the guys I'm playing with. I know because they smashed us around a bit in the championships," Ringin said.

"I'm mostly worried about just having a good game and bowling well."

Ringin will first be in action for Naps this afternoon as it chases North Ballarat's 165-run tally in Ballarat Cricket Association club firsts.

He played a key role on day one, capturing 3-38.

* MATT Ringin's Victorian selection builds on a good summer for the club in representative competition.

Former Napoleons-Sebastopol all-rounder Alex Cairns achieved All-Australian selection from an impressive Australian Country Cricket Championship campaign.

Cairns, now based at Geelong club Bell Post Hill, was the only Victorian named in the team.

The 25-year-old said the honour came as a good "shock".

"I was pretty lucky. I had a pretty successful championship," Cairns said.

"It was a nice unexpected surprise."

Cairns chalked up 229 runs in seven championship matches with a highest score of 150 against South Australia.

With the ball Cairns nabbed 11 wickets with the best figures of 4-12 off 3.1 overs against the ACT.

He has turned his cricket focus to Bell Post Hill as his team fights to stay in the Geelong Cricket Association finals chase.

"We've had a season of mixed results. At the moment we need a win to get in a finals position," Cairns said.

Cairns still has strong Ballarat ties, studying nursing at Australian Catholic University's Ballarat campus.
