Darley, Lakers dominate interleague squad

THE CHANGING of the guard in the Ballarat Football League this season has been re-affirmed with the announcement of the BFL interleague squad yesterday.Eight Darley players and six Lakers were named in the 60-player squad that will represent the RegionalOne BFL at the VCFL Country Championships Division One to be held in Shepparton from May 30 to June 1.Last year's representative team, which thrashed Bendigo at the QEO, was dominated by players from Sunbury, Redan, East Point and Ballarat. There were no Darley players and only one Lake Wendouree player (Brendan Gilbert) selected for last year's team.The squad for the country championships, which includes teams from the Ovens & Murray, Goulburn Valley and Hampden leagues, will train together three times before the cut back to a final squad of 28 players on May 26.Training will begin on on Wednesday, May 7 at Darley Park at 6.30pm."Over the coming weeks players will be omitted and added to the squad depending upon their form and as injuries dictate," BFL interleague senior coach Peter Freeman said."We are very happy with the initial squad named and we believe that we will give a very good account of ourselves and follow up on the great performance by the boys when they were Division One Runners Up in 2006," BFL interleague senior coach Peter Freeman saidThe six Lakers players include coach Matthew Battistello, and new recruits Chris McGuigan, Mick Foster and ruckman Josh Caracher, in addition to Les Hughes and Tim Madden. The Darley eight include new recruits Rob Cheevers, Adrian Newman and Jarrod Edwards, which means with there will be two Jarrod Edwards' (the Redan champion of the same name has also been named) in the squad. Three Balben North City and three Sebastopol players have been named. The remainder include five from Bacchus Marsh, East Point, Redan and Melton, six from Sunbury and Melton South and seven from Ballarat. There will be three training sessions at Darley Park (May 7, 14 and 27), and two at Eastern Oval (May 21 and 29).
