AVENUE will have to wait until tomorrow evening to begin preparations for its Ballarat Regional Bowls Association division one grand final opponent.
The Bacchus March club will not know its rival for the decider until the preliminary final between Mt Xavier and Victoria is played out at Central Wendouree, with the winner to back-up in the grand final at Sebastopol on Sunday.
Play was abandoned last weekend before a bowl was rolled between the X-men and Victoria when rain swept through the region.
But Avenue bowler Simon Cornock didn't believe it would affect his team, who have prepared the same as for any other match.
"I reckon the top four were pretty evenly matched so I think no matter who plays who, it's going to be close," Cornock said.
Cornock said the rain had meant players had used a sluggish synthetic surface at home, which had rolled at speeds similar to the grass rink it will play on at Sebastopol.
"With all the rain, it runs pretty similar to a 14-15sec grass green," he said.
"We've just tried to keep it as simple as possible."
Cornock said youngsters Bryce Young and Brad Sargent would bypass Sunday's regional under-18 pairs finals in favour of the division one grand final, meaning just one change would be made to the team that defeated Mt Xavier in the semi-final. Jim Kenny will return.
For the X-men and Victoria, the situation is simple: win.
The ledger stands at one win each in 2009-10, with Victoria prevailing on its synthetic in round three before Mt Xavier overturned the result on the grass in round 12.
Tomorrow's surface at Central Wendouree is expected to benefit the X-men, who are much more comfortable on the grass.
"It evens it up," X-men's Daryl Lamb said.
"It was a wet day when we played them (in round three) and we had to play on synthetic and they rounded us up. We are not noted for our ability on synthetic."
Lamb expected the quick back-up for tomorrow's winner would play into the hands of Avenue, who are not forced to play two games on the one weekend.
PREDICTION: Mt Xavier by 12 shots.
