Duo to lead forwards: coach

13/02/2008 8:37:33 PM
JOSH Smith and Robbie Tarrant.

If everything falls into place for North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald, this will be the duo which has an instrumental role in the Selkirk Roosters again being a major player in the VFL this year.

FitzGerald is looking to build a more structured attack around the newcomers to the Kangaroos' AFL list, unless of course they make such an impression pre-season in the NAB Cup and initially bypass the VFL.

The odds are though that the products of the 2007 AFL national draft will be linchpins for North Ballarat for the majority of their debut seasons with the Kangaroos.

FitzGerald said the Roosters had last year relied on an innovative mobile forward line to produce goals.

First-year player Robbie Gregg led the way as the most consistent avenue with 36 goals.

Djaran Whyman (26 goals) was dangerous as an opportunist as was Matt Campbell (18) and Lindsay Thomas (20), while the injury-prone Callum Urch (24) was always capable of a bag of goals.

Rarely though did North Ballarat rely on going through a stand-out centre half-forward or have a big target in front of goal, although Tristan Cartledge and Orren Stephenson did periodically play these roles.

"We're looking to have a more set structure," FitzGerald said, looking to Smith and Tarrant as marking forwards.

Smith, 21, joins the Kangaroos from West Perth in the WAFL as a tall (195cm) mature-age key forward.

Tarrant (196cm) has been picked up from the Bendigo Pioneers and most likely to start out at centre half-forward for North Ballarat.

Rookie Michael Wunoke is another newcomer via the Kangaroos who could make a name for himself near goal for North Ballarat.

While the Roosters expect to be better equipped in attack, the same cannot be said for their ruck department with Tristan Cartledge having been rookied by Richmond and set to play with Coburg Tigers in the VFL.

With Justin Hardy also moving to the Tasmanian Devils, Orren Stephenson has not only been left as the number one choice for the ruck, but North Ballarat's only candidate.

FitzGerald said he had already spoken with Michael Searl about being the main support to Stephenson.

Searl is not new to filling the makeshift role, but has also been highly valuable as a tall defender.

FitzGerald said there were already plenty of positive signs for the Roosters as pre-season training moved into top gear with a focus on football-specific fitness and honing football skills.

  • Tarrant looks like getting his first taste of the AFL against Western Bulldogs in the NAB Cup in Darwin tomorrow night.

He is in a 28-man squad for the match.

And Cartledge is in Richmond's squad to face St Kilda at Telstra Dome tomorrow night.
