FIRST there was Twenty20 cricket, then what amounts to “Fifty50” footy for the AFL’s pre-season football competition.
Now it is lawn bowls’ turn, with Forty40 bowling.
The Webbcona Bowls Club will host the region’s first Forty40 bowls competition in March as the sport attempts to push into a progressively younger age bracket.
The twilight competition will be run on Thursday evenings for four weeks, starting on March 3.
“It is a new concept developed by Bowls Victoria to attract younger people to the game,” the club’s Forty40 coordinator Murray Alpen said.
“Every Bowls Club in Victoria was invited to register their interest. Webbcona was the only club in this region to take up the opportunity.
“We are a progressive club and we’d like to think we could run the competition really well. We also see it as opportunity to pick up some players. We’ve previously run a similar competition with our corporate cup. The concept is similar but there are extras like powerplays.”
The game is played in a two bowls per player triples format with two 40-minute halves of six ends each. Player positions rotate, with each side able to declare a powerplay once per half where they can pick up double points. Each time may only have one experienced player. There are a number of other rule changes brought in to speed up play. Further information: www.forty40.bowlsvic.com.au.
