Gritty play, double victory

THEIR weekend assignment was big but Ballarat Lady Miners did what they had to do to get their season rolling.

A ferocious game against Knox Raiders at the Minerdome yesterday capped off a double win for the Lady Miners after a stop-start campaign launch to the South East Australian Basketball League women's conference.

The Ballarat Community Health Lady Miners were outrun early by the Raiders before fighting back to seal the match 78-64.

This followed a dominant away win against Frankston, 83-64, on Saturday night.

Lady Miners' coach Kym Cassells said there was little relief for her team, which will travel to Albury-Wodonga at the week's end.

"It's full-steam ahead from now," Cassells said.

"We did what we needed to this weekend and we're busy from now on catching up on games.

"There's a few top teams waiting for us in the next couple of weeks."

The Lady Miners were dealt three byes in the opening seven rounds of the season and will face another six double-headers before finals.

This round's performances have lifted the Lady Miners into the top four.

But it was not easy.

The Lady Miners struggled with accuracy around the ring early yesterday and were out-run by Knox, who had pulled ahead by 10 points at quarter time.

The Lady Miners regrouped and served up a gritty second term's play to edge in front by a point at the main break.

Cassells said it was all about finding a rhythm after a quick match turnaround and night on the road.

"It took us a little while to adjust," Cassells said.

"Knox are a young side with a lot of intensity.

"We had to make sure we didn't rush and get caught in their fast game."

Play was rough with intense defensive pressure from both teams.

Key forward Kristy Rinaldi was sent from the court with a dislocated finger midway through the fourth term.

The match was a stark contrast to the night before when the Lady Miners jumped out of the blocks for a 15-point lead over Frankston at the first break.
