Guard Ryan Stevens back for Miners

11 Feb, 2009 12:55 AM
BALLARAT Miners fans can expect to see a different Ryan Stevens on his return to the South East Australian Basketball League this season.

Stevens was one of the SEABL's most dynamic guards when he last played three years ago.

Always inspirational, Stevens consistently thrilled Minerdome crowds with his spring and agility.

Stevens is hoping to rediscover the same athleticism, but after two seasons away from the game acknowledges he might have to change his game slightly.

"I'll probably have to modify my style," the former RetireInvest Ballarat Miners captain said yesterday.

"I'm not as nimble as I was once," hinting that he was considering more of a shooting game.

The 29-year-old is not planning to hold too much back though as a he prepares for his comeback.

Although Stevens says he might not be as intense as he was previously, it is difficult to imagine him playing any other way.

He said he was surprised how well he had returned to the game.

Stevens has spent the past two years working and holidaying overseas .

Not only has he returned to the ranks of the Miners, Stevens is also back teaching physical education at Sebastopol College.

He said he had gained enormous professional experience teaching in England.

Stevens said travelling had forced him out of his comfort zone, enhancing his professional and life skills, and confidence.

"However, it is always great to get back home and see family and friends - the one thing you can never take for granted."

Stevens said with a young and new-look playing roster, he planned to pass on his experience wherever possible in a leadership role with the Miners.

Miners coach Shane Mathison is thrilled to have Stevens Ryan back.

"He brings so much experience, and adds great depth to our squad.

"It is not just the added strength, talent and physical presence of Stevo on the court,

"It's also his leadership within the group that is outstanding," Mathison said.

Stevens is part a new broom sweeping through the Miners.

He joins American import Rishawn Norwood and former Sydney Kings shooting guard BJ Carter as high profile signings.

Missing from last season are the retired Eric Hayes; Ricky Henderson, who has been recruited by the Adelaide Crows in the AFL; United States import Marcus Toney-El; and Ricky Scarce, who has moved with his employment.

The Miners open their season against Mt Gambier in Ballarat on Saturday, March 14.

This will be part of a doubleheader with the Ballarat Community Health Lady Miners playing Nunawading on the same card.
