Harness racing: Bonavista Bay claims Golden Nugget

28 Nov, 2009 01:37 PM
BOOM pacer Bonavista Bay last night captured one of Australian harness racing's most prestigious four-year-old classics, the $175,000 Golden Nugget in Perth.

The bold striding Bonavista Bay led all the way for Smythes Creek trainer Emma Stewart and WA reinsman Mark Reed, who was driving the entire for the first time.

Bonavista Bay ($3.30) led from the pole and had plenty in hand on the line as he beat home Captain Joy ($2.60 favourite) by 2.7m.

He rated 1:59.1 for 2536 metres.

It was a major training triumph for Stewart and her partner Clayton Tonkin after their stable star had lowered his colours a week earlier while suffering dehydration and hoof problems.

Bonavista Bay has now won 14 of 19 starts for more than $250,000 in earnings.
