Hepburn fires first shots ahead of CHFL grand final

09 Sep, 2010 01:27 AM
HEPBURN coach Shane Robertson wasted little time in firing the first shots ahead of Saturday's Central Highlands Football League grand final.

Speaking at yesterday's press conference, Robertson took a thinly-veiled swipe at Daylesford coach Luke Beattie over his comments following the Bulldogs' shock semi-final win over the Burras 12 days ago.

In an article published on Friday, September 3, Beattie stood by his early season beliefs that the Bulldogs would get better as the season wore on, drawing the following sarcastic retort.

''As Luke said in The Courier last Friday, they've timed their season nicely so (Saturday's grand final) might be just a matter of us just turning up, filling in numbers, having a kick and seeing what happens at the end of the day,'' Robertson said.

All mind games aside, Robertson admitted the playing group turned to the video and scrutinised that semi-final defeat on Monday night.

Robertson said a number of deficiencies were ear-marked, which the Burras would look to improve on Saturday.

''Full credit to Daylesford _ they played well _ but we did a good job of beating ourselves I thought. Our discipline was pretty ordinary.

''The way we controlled the footy and the play was pretty ordinary as well,'' he said.

''We showed a lot of bad habits that we hadn't throughout the course of the year.''

Beattie didn't believe the fact that Hepburn was forced to proceed through a gut-busting preliminary final against Buninyong would be of big aid to the Bulldogs' chances.

''Games like that can really make teams in some regards, particularly if your not playing that good.

''I think Hepburn would have got a lot of confidence out of that game given they had to work so hard to achieve it,'' Beattie said.

''There's a belief within our group that stands tall regardless of where we are on the ladder or who is in our team.

''Particularly when it comes to finals, we have players that are ready to come and achieve what they need to get the ultimate prize.''
