STAWELL Gift winner Sam Jamieson has drawn the backmark for next weekend’s $25,000 Ballarat Gift field.Jamieson claimed the ultimate Victorian Athletic League title at Stawell in 2008 and has been building strength on the VAL circuit this season.The Williamstown-based sprinter’s tight mark placed him as backmarker in the Maryborough Gift on January 2 but he has been finding form of late, including a third in the Wangaratta Gift late last month. He has been assigned 3.25 metres at Eureka Stadium, with heats to be run in a twilight session next Saturday evening.Jamaican sprinter Khan Marr, also based in Williamstown, will race off 3.5m and in-form metropolitan sprinter Cam Dunbar will be tough to beat off the 5.5-metre mark.Dunbar has been a prolific finals contender over 120m this season, including top-three finishes at the Gippsland, Peninsula, Maryborough and Wangaratta Gifts and claiming the sash at Rye on January 14.Ballarat has three hometown sprinters entered in the Gift stakes with Joel Bee, who won in Albury last weekend, also a likely addition.Alfredton’s Matt Wiltshire holds the shortest mark of the Ballarat contenders on 6.75m.The Peter O’Dwyer-trained athlete won the restricted 120m final in the Ballarat meet last year and has been building form as a strong chance to take out the title event. His summer includes the Peninsula Gift crown.He was runner-up in Warrugul and reached the semi-finals at Maryborough.Fellow POD squad member Rory Nunn will race off 8.5m and O’Dwyer, the 2010 Ballarat Gift winner, has the 8.75m mark.Veteran Buninyong sprinter Rod Matthews, the 2009 Ballarat Gift winner, will be on 11m which is one meter behind the Gift frontmarkers, including stablemate Justin Templar.Nathan Fox (7.5m) is also in the mix as the Ballarat contingent seeks to bring the title home from Queensland where it is held by Andrew McCabe, who has not entered this year.Holly Dobbyn (7m), Nadia Domaschenz, Tara Domaschenz (8m), Tahlia Alder, Kate Jones and Patricia Fox (9m) will lead the Ballarat charge in the Ballarat Women’s Gift (120m).Bendigo teenager Sophie Taylor will seek to win a third consecutive Ballarat women’s crown off scratch.The Ballarat Gift meet starts in a twilight session Saturday before finals day at Eureka Stadium on Sunday.
