Kelly takes state title

KELLY Ruddick completed the set of state walking titles at the Victorian Track and Field Championships at Olympic Park at the weekend.Ruddick, of Ballarat Harriers, claimed the open 5000 metres for the first time in her first race back after stomach surgery.She adds the crown to 10km, 15km and 20km championships on the road.She covered the 5000m in 23 minutes, 17.03 seconds � almost 35 seconds clear of teenager Amy Burren.Burren set the early pace in a bid to clock a world junior qualifying time, which she did in finishing second.Although slower than her winning time in the Victorian country titles in Ballarat earlier this year, Ruddick was delighted to capture the championship for the first time. Ruddick led a Ballarat female charge at the meet.Melbourne-based Eureka athletes Victoria Mitchell and Kathryn Mitchell also claimed state titles.Victoria Mitchell continued her comeback after about nine months off the track by taking out her signature event, the open 3000m steeplechase.In her first major test since returning from a spate of setbacks, she ran 10:12.02 to beat home Julia Webb from the United States by more than 10 seconds.
