Lady Miners' Jarry crowned league's best

LADY Miners forward Rachel Jarry has been the crowned the best in the South East Australian Basketball League women's conference this year.

Jarry was named the most valuable player on Saturday night.

She polled 37 votes _ four more than Kilsyth and former Lady Miners guard Deanna Smith.

Also a member of the SEABL all-star five, she received eight three votes, four twos and five singles.

Jarry, 18, who also took out Ballarat's MVP award, had an extraordinary debut season in the SEABL.

Recruited from WNBL team Bulleen Boomers, Jarry averaged 19.6 points and nine rebounds in 23 games.

She became renowned for her physical presence and formed a formidable combination with captain Karen Ashby to lead the Ballarat Community Health Lady Miners into the finals.

She won player of the week twice and was also named as SEABL player of the month in May and July.

Possibly her best game came in round 14, when she had 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists against Frankston.

In a big double for the Ballarat Basketball Club, Cortney Williamson took out the SEABL D-League women's conference MVP.

She polled 13 votes - two clear of Knox's Alana Wallis.

Williamson joined Ballarat from Ararat this year and averaged 18.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

The guard scored 30 points or more four times and in the second last round finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds against Kilsyth.

Ballarat centre Cameron McCallum finished third in the D-League men's MVP award and coach Grant Spencer second by a single vote behind Nunawading's Duncan Berg.

Brisbane's Donna Rinaldi, formerly of Ballarat, was runner-up to Larissa Anderson in the women's coach of the year, with retiring Ballarat mentor Kym Cassells third.
