Lakers drown Swans

SLICK passages of play sliced Ballarat's defence apart and re-inforced Lake Wendouree's minor premier status.

The Lakers drowned the Swans 61-41 on Saturday in the final round of the Ballarat Football League senior netball home-and-away season.

One blemish mars the Lakers' impressive 2008 court-time - a one-goal loss to Sebastopol in round 12 - but the Lakers will have a chance for redemption in Saturday's qualifying final against the Kookaburras.

Lake Wendouree coach Sally McLean said earning top finals seeding for a second consecutive year had been a team goal, set over the summer.

And it had taken a full team effort to achieve.

"It is a great feeling to be on top of the ladder again, " McLean said.

"There were a few changes in players at most clubs and the great thing about BFL netball is that you're never entirely sure who's coming in at the start of the season.

"The minor premiership is a real sense of achievement."

Fellow finals contender Ballarat served up an early challenge to the Lakers, who were forced to dig deep to capture the win.

The Swans have had a stellar run home, snaring big scalps Redan and Sebastopol, and stuck with the Lakers until half-time.

Swans' playing coach Pam Virgo suffered an ankle injury midway through the first quarter, forcing all-rounder Krystal Whitty to move from centre into defence.

Lakers' sharp-shooter Sue Nalder still managed to find space, missing just three goals on her way to a tally of 39.

Offsider Casey Frame held her ground to notch up 22.

The Swans bite was in its fast attack which Lakers centre-court trio Stacey McCartin, Laura Pyke and Kara Hart worked hard to stem.

A sixth-place finish has the Swans pitted against an in-form Melton in the first elimination final.

The Bloods scraped home by three goals in their sole encounter with the Swans mid-season and will be tough to beat.
